Dry Mascara

Huck reminds me a lot of dry mascara. Though you know the makeup will only make your lashes a clumpy mess, you don’t want to throw it away in fear that you might miss on any potential it may have. For a minute, Huck actually seemed to be going on a right path. He was awknowledging Jim as his friend, someone he truly cared for. Huck, in my mind, was finally breaking free of the racism that flooded his society. How naive of me. As soon as Tom came back (ugh...), Huck immediately resorted back into the role of a follower. When “freeing” the already free Jim, Huck knew Tom’s ideas were utterly ridiculous. Yet, he played along in Tom’s game instead of sticking up against the mistreatment of his friend Jim. With Tom holding the power, Jim had no backup from Huck. Huck went from accepting his eternal damnation, saying “All right, then, I’ll go to hell” (Twain 210) in regards to protecting Jim; he quickly transitioned to following along with Tom’s romanticized version of Jim’s rescues, though, completely disregarding his friendship with Jim. I guess this really shows how people are so easily intimidated by societal conformity that they’ll go along with what’s wrong even if they know they should do what’s right. Dry mascara never lives up to its potential, anyways.

  1. I really like how you compared Huck to dry mascara in your post. I love your use of visuals in your post and how you brought the end of your post back to another comparison to mascara.

  2. I love how you went deeper and compared Huck's conformity to something as simple as dry mascara. Why do people tend to conform?

  3. The comparison of Huck to dried mascara is very original. How might the negatives of mascara be parallel with the novel...is your dried mascera Katy Perry Roar?
